Group home for teen moms adds free community services

Even these days, when a 14-year-old girl gets pregnant, popular opinion says she’s a loser or stupid, and she deserves whatever happens to her. She often ends up in juvenile detention, on the streets or living with someone who abuses her.

A few artistic bras made by local businesses and community members will be auctioned off to benefit the Florence Crittenton Home. Support Our Girls is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Green Meadow Country Club.

Florence Crittenton has record breaking Paint the Town Pink!
Florence Crittenton is delighted to announce that last weekend’s annual gala fundraiser, Paint the Town Pink, was a huge success, raising a record $200,000. The event was sold out with over 460 guests turning out to support the homes’ efforts in providing care for pregnant and parenting teens and young families.

Home honored for its works
Sarah Galison, 17, didn’t lose sight of her hopes and dreams after becoming pregnant. The teenage mom from Boston moved to Helena at the end of June to live at the Florence Crittenton Home and learn how to become a good mom. Her daughter, Saffron, was born 10 days ago, a perfect 7 pounds, 7 ounces, with a head full of dark hair.

The Case for Young Mothers at the Margin
As of late it seems like there is a good deal of discussion and focus on the topics of abstinence, teen pregnancy prevention, adoption and even the search for middle ground on the issue of abortion. All are subjects worthy of thoughtful discussion, debate and collaborative problem solving, but I find the discussion a bit ironic given that we are facing the first increase in teen pregnancy in 15 years.

Having the right support in order to continue school can be the difference between success and failure for pregnant and parenting teens. During the “back to school” season, please remember the young girls and babies who depend upon services at Florence Crittenton. They are headed back to school too and need classroom supplies, backpacks and support for child care, clothing and food.

Florence Crittenton receives $10,000 grant from PPL Montana
Today Florence Crittenton was presented with a check for $10,000 from PPL Montana.  The funds will go towards the budgeting and money management component of Crittetnon’s independent living skills training for the center’s teen moms.

This weekend's Parade magazine featured an article about Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry's new movie with the most buzz at this year's Sundance Film Festival, "Precious." The movie will be released in major cities next week and hopefully in Helena shortly thereafter.

Loving your Baby from the Inside Out: Florence Crittenton Home Receives $3,300 Grant from March of Dimes
To further the March of Dimes mission of improving the health of babies, they have generously granted Florence Crittenton Home with $3,300 for the non-profit’s new and unique Loving your Baby from the Inside Out classes and therapy. Loving your Baby from the Inside Out increases pregnancy care for hard to reach highly at-risk teen mothers who have multiple pregnancy risk factors including tobacco, alcohol use, homelessness, poverty, past abuse and neglect.

The top 25 Florence Crittenton Home Shootout participants put their skills to the test during Sunday afternoon’s championship shootout.  The shootout, an important summer fundraiser for Florence Crittenton, was held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at all three Helena courses—Bill Roberts, Fox Ridge and Green Meadow.  Participants paid $5 for a shot at getting closest to the pin and qualifying for Sunday afternoon’s championship shootout.

Announcing Florence Crittenton Home’s Grand Garden Opening
The girls, babies, staff, volunteers and donors of the Florence Crittenton Home held a Grand Garden Opening this Friday.  The garden has been made possible thanks to direction from Florence Crittenton’s Jane Bucks and the outstanding enthusiasm and 2 AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers, Kathryn Hutchinson of AERO and Rachel Conn of WEEL who help coordinate neighborhood gardens in Helena.

Florence Crittenton is Tickled Pink - over $126,000 raised!
Last Saturday night the Florence Crittenton Home hosted their annual Paint the Town Pink gala dinner at the Great Northern Hotel.  Over 350 people attended the 5th annual fundraiser and were entertained in a spectacular setting illuminating the theme ‘Fire and Ice’.  There was gourmet food, incredible auction items and dancing to music by the Carousel band.

Florence Crittenton Home & Services in Helena , a home for pregnant and parenting young women announced today that Barbara Burton has been appointed as the new Executive Director for the organization. Burton will focus her efforts on establishing the Home as the number one provider of residential and outreach services for young women and their children both statewide and on a national scale.

Annual Shamrock Luncheon March 17 th To Benefit the Florence Crittenton Onsite Nursery
The 41st Annual Shamrock Luncheon for Florence Crittenton Home and Services will be March 17, from 11:00 to 1:00 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1700 Missoula Avenue . The luncheon features homemade salads, breads, special music from Irish tenor, Bill Platenberg, First Lutheran Kindergarten class, and Anne Wolfinger, Celtic Harpist. For six years, American Federal Savings Bank has partnered with the Florence Crittenton Home and volunteered to organize the luncheon which benefits the Home's onsite nursery.
